Parents of 5th grade Orchestra students! The Memorial Middle School (MMS) Area Orchestra Festival is a concert with various orchestra students from every SFSD middle school. The festival is on Monday, April 17, at 7:00 pm at MMS. Fifth grade orchestra students are invited to attend and to perform songs they have already been practicing. This is OPTIONAL – students are not required to attend.
This is an opportunity for Discovery students to perform with other orchestra students that they will see in middle school. Discovery families are responsible for transporting their student, along with their student’s instrument and folder. Please make sure everything is labeled as there will be many students attending.
Here is the schedule the day of concert:
- 4:15 - 4:30 pm: Students should arrive for unpacking and tuning during this time to avoid MMS dismissal traffic.
- 4:30 - 5:30 pm: Students will practice in the MMS Auditorium.
- 5:30 pm: Parents should pick-up their student from practice. This would be a good time to grab dinner. Instruments and folders can stay at MMS during the break.
- 6:30 - 6:45 pm: Students should return for re-tuning and dressed nicely.
- 7:00 pm: Concert begins.
We apologize for the late notice!

Wow, check out our galaxy of stars! Explorers did an out-of-this-world job at reading for the Everybody Reads initiative! We surpassed our goal and reached 37,669 stars! Now, just because today was the last day of the Everybody Reads initiative, doesn’t mean you have to stop reading. Author of the Magic Tree House series, Mary Pope Osborne, said it best: “Reading is a passport to countless adventures.” Enjoy the journeys, Explorers!
AMAZING - look at all those stars! On Monday, Discovery reached its personal goal of reading 27,000 books! Let’s finish strong, Discovery. Keep reading, and let’s see if we can surpass our goal and read 30,000 books! #EverybodyReads2023
Wow, look at all these STAR readers at Discovery! There is one week left in the Everybody Reads initiative, so keep on reading. You’re doing great, Explorers! #EverybodyReads2023 #starreaders
SFSD would like to give a huge shout-out to our partners at Delta Dental who visit schools to complete much-needed dental work for eligible students! Cleanings, cavities, and root canals are all done in the mobile bus, so students don’t have to miss school for an appointment! You put a smile on our faces, Delta Dental! Thank you!
We have some superSTAR readers at Discovery - check out our galaxy! Keep reading, Explorers! You're doing great! #EverybodyReads2023

Before school, classroom K05 had a visitor. #leprechaun #saintpatricksday
A huge THANK YOU to our PTO and Discovery families for the sweet and salty snack bar today! What a great mid-week pick me up; we appreciate it!
Chef Johnson visited classroom K01 yesterday to bake "Talk it Out" pizzas! This great, interactive lesson has students practice solving a small problem with the Kelso’s Choice: "Talk it Out" with three steps!
1. Crust: state your feeling.
2. Sauce: state when your feeling happened.
3. Cheese please: make a request.
Students were given small problem prompts to practice (ex. someone cut in line).
Crust: “I feel sad.”
Sauce: “When you cut in line.”
Cheese: “Please do not do that again.”
Who knew our counselor, Mrs. Johnson, had so many talents!
Although the national recognized "Read Across America" week ends on March 3, Discovery is celebrating it the week of March 6 - March 9. The National Education Association sponsored event celebrates reading, along with the birthday of the beloved author, Dr. Seuss. Not only will students participate in various reading activities and lessons, we’ve also incorporated dress up days. Get ready for a fun week of celebrating reading!
