Classroom 402 dove into an exciting hands-on science activity to explore how the human finger works! First, students built their own models using strings to represent tendons - showing how pulling on the string moves human bones and causes movement. Next, they took their learning to the next level by dissecting a real chicken foot to observe how tendons and bones work together in a living organism. This engaging activity helped students understand the amazing design of our bodies, while sparking curiosity and teamwork!

Buddy classrooms 204 and 504 learned about the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. They listened to the read aloud, “Balloons Over Broadway: The Inspiring True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade” by Melissa Sweet. The students worked together to color and decorate their own parade floats out of balloons!

It is important to be prepared for the winter storms and extreme cold that every South Dakota winter brings. Please read the following information so you are aware of the procedures for school-related cancellations and postponements. School officials use their best judgment about school closings, late starts, or early dismissals; however, please remember that a parent has the right to keep children home or to pick them up from school early if they feel weather conditions require this action. LATE START OR CANCELLED In the event that school needs to be cancelled or delayed, families will be alerted via a phone call. You can also check the District’s website at www.sf.k12.sd.us for updated information. Announcements will also be made on local radio and television stations. Please avoid calling the school or the Instructional Planning Center. Phone lines are needed for emergency communications. • If school is one hour late, breakfast will be served. • If school is two hours late, breakfast will NOT be served. EARLY DISMISSAL Storms occasionally move in during the day. If school is dismissed early, families will receive a phone call and the information will appear on the District’s website at www.sf.k12.sd.us. Dismissals will be referred to as “one hour early” or “two hours early” due to the number of different building schedules. It is very important that every family has a plan for early dismissal. Be sure your student knows where to go in case no one is at home. Talk to your student about his/her safety during winter weather emergencies. Make sure students are properly dressed for predicted weather conditions: walking home, waiting for the bus, or being delayed on a bus in a weather-related situation.

During the recent elections, 5th grade ULE (Unique Learning Experiences/Gifted) students used Sam Labs Maker Kits to write computer codes and create a voting machine. They connected their Chromebooks to the Sam Labs kits and polled 137 fifth grade students on their favorite candy – chocolate or gummies. The data showed 69 students favored chocolate, over 68 votes for gummies. Excellent work, 5th grade ULE!

Some of Discovery’s classrooms had their own Presidential election yesterday! In addition to voting for President, some classrooms had other “policies” they were voting on such as: Special Treat Day (Oreos or Chips Ahoy) and Special Dress-Up Day (hats or pajamas). Check out our great voter turnout at: https://youtu.be/A5cSBELRIGo!
