Discovery Elementary 5th grade student council set out with a BIG goal - to collect 1,000 pairs of new socks to be donated to the Bishop Dudley House. Not only did they meet their goal, they surpassed it! On Friday, the council celebrated as they proudly handed over a whopping 1,081 pairs of socks to help those in need! Did you know, since 2007, the month of November has been recognized as National Homeless Youth Awareness Month? As many as 2.5 million youth experience homelessness per year. Representatives from the Bishop Dudley House were in attendance on Friday to collect the donated socks. Student council members had the opportunity to meet with the representatives to learn more about Bishop Dudley's mission and how their donation will make a difference for the people in our community. They asked thoughtful questions, learned about the impact of their efforts, and even helped load the socks up for delivery! Thank you to these young leaders for showcasing the power of kindness, generosity, and community!

Memorial Middle School (MMS) has four core values, and they focus on one each quarter. First quarter, they have really focused on COMMUNITY. What does it mean to take care of AND give back to the community. Their grand finale “community” project is to provide a safe and fun environment for west-side trick-or-treaters on Halloween night. The MMS PRO Time classrooms will be hosting “Treat the Halls of MMS” on October 31, from 5:30 pm - 6:20 pm. Students are decorating doors and passing out candy at 47 locations throughout the halls and any child accompanied by an adult is welcome to attend.

With tomorrow being October 31, this is a reminder that students should NOT wear a costume to school. We have recently had plenty of activities and dress-up days: Fall classroom parties, Fall Dance, and today’s secret theme dress up day. Thank you for your cooperation!

Some of our kindergarten classrooms read the book "The World Needs Who You Were Made To Be" and made unique hot air balloons inspired by the beautiful illustrations of the story. The book celebrates uniqueness and individuality physically and in ways that we learn. The balloons will be a reminder to students to be proud of who they are all year!

Mrs. Thorstenson, classroom 405, made a deal with her students - if they met their math goal she would buy them donuts. Well. . .(insert drumroll) they solved 2000 multiplication problems in 5 minutes with 95% accuracy, so they got donuts today! They also set a new goal of 2605 problems in 5 minutes with 96% accuracy. Check-out these math whizzes in action at https://youtube.com/shorts/OuTeOagTnIw?feature=share. Excellent work, 405!

We need your help! If we do not have enough volunteers for our upcoming Fall Dance next Friday, October 25, we will have to cancel the event. We need volunteers to help with setting-up, running games, and tearing down. There are 30-minute time slots available and running the games is very easy. If you can help, please sign-up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C44ADAD2CA3FF2-52359975-2024#/.

Our 5th grade Student Council loves connecting with the community! Student council joined our neighbors at Edgewood Vista to play bingo. The residents loved their youthful energy, and the students loved listening to stories of what life was like when they were in 5th grade.

It’s Socktober! What is Socktober? Find out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1YIK5UOnOM Each night in the United States, an estimated 650,000 people are experiencing homelessness. Socktober’s goal is to have people show that even a small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of the homeless. Discovery’s Student Council has set a goal to collect 1,000 pairs of new socks for the Bishop Dudley Hospitality House in Sioux Falls! Student Council is collecting socks until October 31. The greatest need is adult socks. Donations can be put in various “Socktober boxes” around the school. Last year, we were just short of our goal at 775 pairs of socks. Let's see if we can hit our goal this year!

Last week, our Learning Adventures Preschool learned about Native American history. During the lesson, students made Native American Rainsticks. The activity helps students improve their fine motor skills, along with strengthening their hands and fingers through coloring, cutting, and other tools. The students also read Native American stories and learned how to say "good day" in Lakota.
